The 2016 - 2017 Meeting Schedule

 Sep. 15, 2016

Scott Cesari - Pocono Patterns

Scott will present, "The History of Fly Fishin In America as Seen Through the Eyes of the Hook. Through Scott's study of the flies that were created to fish the waters of the Pocono Mountain Region in NE Pennsylvania, the presentation details both the flies that he found and how it illustrates the history of our sport. You will learn about patterns that date back as far as the mid 1800's, about the rise and fall of the famed Henryville House and it's prestigious guests, and you will see how some of the patterns he discovered can be traced back to the very first English writings on fly fishing from the 1600's.

Don Douple - Native Trout & Hatches in PA

Long-time time club members are all familiar with Don Douple and his excellent presentations. Don is a photographer, nature artist and one of the most knowledgeable experts on Pennsylvania hatches and how to fish them. He has also developed some very creative patterns for fishing in Pa. Several years ago he moved up to central Pennsylvania to focus on fishing some of the premier limestone streams of the state college area. While I don’t know the exact focus of Thursday’s presentation, but I guarantee you that it will be one of the most informative and useful presentations of the year.

Tom Gilmore

Tom is a dedicated environmentalist. His 1983 to 2012 tenure as NJ AudubonŐs President is punctuated by at least four major environmental achievements. But his passion and respect for the outdoors doesnŐt end there. Tom is also an avid fly fisherman.

Tom has fly fished around the world for over 40 years. During that time he has recorded the details of landing over 11,000 game fish with a fly rod. He is an accomplished author, having written numerous articles on the many aspects of fly fishing, and is currently working on his fourth fly fishing book.

Tom's first book, False Albacore, was published in 2002 by Countryman Press, and represented the first book dedicated exclusively to the pursuit of this exciting and challenging species, extremely fast and strong for their weight. His second book entitled, Tuna On The Fly, was published in the Fall of 2006 by Countryman Press. Here Tom Gilmore explained the behavior and habits of the several species of tuna, and where they can be found. His book includes tackle, tactics and important flies and knots, and is considered an indispensable guide for those pursuing this sport fishing trophy.

His Fly Fisher's Guide to Pennsylvania was published in 2016. The book details 160 trout streams and provides detailed driving directions to over 400 public access points. Under the sections "What the Experts Say" the author shares insights gleaned from interviews of over two dozen guides and experienced fly anglers.

Mark Sedotti

Mark Sedotti is a pioneer in Northeast saltwater fly fishing. He was born and raised in Port Chester, NY, 26 miles north of New York City on Long Island Sound. Here he developed the flies and casting techniques to fish the rich local waters for striped bass, bluefish, bonito, false albacore and other gamefish of the Northeast coastline. Naturally, Mark expanded into freshwater fishing over the years, and has vast experience fishing for trout, Pike, and even Makinaw with a fly rod.

He is a respected fly casting instructor and teacher who has written articles that have been published in the: “American Angler, Fly Tier, Outdoor Life, The Fisherman,” and more featuring trout, pike and other species of fish. As the Casting Columnist for Saltwater Fly Fishing Magazine (1995-2000), Mark is known for his articles on Striped Bass, Bluefish, and False Albacore.

Mark is known for casting unusually large flies (4" to over 24") tremendous distances, with uncanny accuracy. Both things once thought impossible. He does this with a unique, ultra-powerful back cast called the "Sayonara Sling". He casts distances with magnum back casts of 120’-140’.

He's also had some of his fly patterns, such as the Sedotti's Slammer menhaden series, the Sedotti Mackerel, and the Sedotti Flounder, to name three, featured in articles and fly tying books. Many of his patterns are giant and are castable by design, because of his concept of "weight balancing", which involves adding enough weight to the fly to counter (and negate) a pattern's drag. He's now into tying patterns that exhibit strike triggering actions, similar to what you see in many popular soft plastic baits.
