Bamboo Rods
Jim Downes and Jonas from the Feathered Hook in Coburn will present an evening talking on building and choosing a bamboo fly rod. Jim Downes, of the LJ Downes rod company, has been building bamboo fly rods professionally for more than 15 years. The enthusiasm and dedication to the art of cane rod making is reflected in the exacting fly rods he crafts. Culms of bamboo used in the L J Downes rod shop were hand selected in China over two decades ago. His tapers are proprietary, based on but not copied from Heddon’s high-end fly rods. Attention to detail and outstanding workmanship are the hallmarks of an L J Downes bamboo fly rod. Not only are these rods pleasing to the eye, they are made to be fished!
NOTICE!!! The October meeting will be Wednesday, October 16. We apologize for the change. Please pass the word along to your fishing buddies.

Rangley Streamers
Don’t miss this meeting. Sharon Wright will be here tonight.
Sharon E. Wright lives in Lisbon, Maine, between the Sabattus and Androscoggin Rivers. Her inherited interest in Maine tradition and history is evident in her original fly designs which have become her signature in the fly-tying community. She loves to share her passion for tying classic patterns and their histories which has evolved into presentations, shows, and classes. Her appearances include Featured Presenter at the L.L. Bean 100th Anniversary Spring Fishing Expo, the University of Maine Folklife Center at the American Folk Festival, Cabelas Spring Fishing Expo, Rangeley Outdoor Sporting Heritage Museum, Dallas Fly Fishers, and celebrity tier at major East Coast fly-fishing shows. Her custom designs were recently featured in a collaborative work with author/photographer David Klausmeyer in the 2012 winter issue of Catch Magazine. Her great, great, great grandfather was Joshua Gross Rich, one of Maine’s earliest and most prominent outdoor sporting pioneers of the famed Rangeley Lakes region. Many of her original designs are reflective of her heritage, the region, and her family history. Her concentration is on Maine streamers and classic wet flies. Ed Engle - Off Beat Tactics that Catch Fish
Every now and then the tactics that usually catch trout don’t work. In this program Ed explores nonstandard tactics that may work when the normal stuff doesn’t, like fishing the same side of the river with streamers, using large spent wing spinners as attractors, drowning terrestrial patterns, active alternatives to dead-drifting nymphs, high-sticking dry flys, presenting attractor patterns in new ways or swinging dry flys on a tight line. In addition to presenting specific nonstandard tactics the program will encourage fly fishers to let go of their preconceived notions whenever confronted with unusual or difficult fishing conditions.
Note: This is a special program and there is a nominal $10 fee for non-members

Don Balylor
Don has spoken to the club several times in recent years an is expert on the Pocono hatches and streams. His other passion is the history of American fly-fishing. Most experienced fly fishers are familiar with the origins of American fly fishing in the Catskills and such historical figures as Hewitt and Theodore Gordon. Howver, few fly fisherman know that before the Catskills, it was the Poconos and streams like the Brodhead where fly-fishing had its earliest origins. Don will speak about these early days and their lasting influence on American Fly Fishing.
Don Baylor is a fisheries biologist with Aquatic Resource Consulting in the Poconos. He has lived all his life in Stroudsburg, PA and has been an avid fly fisherman since age 11. His life long fishing experiences in the Poconos has made him an expert on the streams and hatches of the Poconos and Upper Delaware. He first published a booklet on fishing the Poconos called Pocono Hatches back in 1980. He has recently revised (2009) and expanded that book as Pocono and Upper Delaware Hatches. The revised book is an excellant overview of the main hatches in the Poconos and discusses which stream they occur. It also includes tying patterns and instructions.
