Now I am in the final days of the trapping season . I might say that I am glad to see the end coming . This was a lousy year to be trapping especialy for fox . The season stated ok as I was catching a fox or coon every coupel of nights for a total of 7 fox 1 mangy . Around the end of november I returned back to my trailer up in Centre county for deer but the roads up in the forest were a sheet of ice so I started stringing steel down on peens creek for water critters primarily Muskrats wich have been in decline over the years to the point of being nonexistant in some streams that I used to trap back in the 70's . Although there was goood sign on Penns creek I managed to catch like 5 for the week as well as my 1st 2 Mink afew coon 1 was over 20lb and a few possums at the campground dump . When I returned home I started in on the fox again and had to deal with frozen soil then the snows came in early January and this put me out of comission . Itried some snow trapping to no avail on one of my new propertys A BIG ESTATE I got friendly with the caretaker . He had atrap set on a deer carcase and caught 10 fox with a rusty old #2 doubel long spring trap go figure I set the place with normal tactics and all I got was dug up traps 3 nights in a row a fox dug up my trap and flipped upside down without firing the trap . To add salt to the wound it took a huge dump down the dirthole I set a second trap right near this trap and thats when the first deep snow came so that was the end of the fox trapping for me as far as catching anymore . We had a good warm spell in the middel of JAN . and I laid into the coon pretty good and got 7 for this warm spell all nice ones . I did set the last weekend for 1 more shot at the fox and coon I used the hayset were you make a small pile of hay and hide 2 traps i there and lure a mound inbetween the 2 traps I did have a pull out at one set and had a nice coon the last day that I caught in a dogproof trap behind a dumpster that puts me close to 30 coons for the year . I am now in beaver mode but this recent cold snap has frozen all my spots again so I pulled on Sat. and took a swim in the process . I want to get at them again when ever this weather stabilizes and the creeks open up again . I took a ride on sunday and started over at Morisville and checked out a spot I could not find it so I went on up rt 32 all along the big d and it was wide open but there were iceburgs all along the banks . I also checked out Lake Warren frozen , Lake Nockamixon frozen , The gamelands 139 back muskrat rd frozen it appears all the still waters are frozen and I cant see them thawing out by the end of the beaver season . Last year was diffrent you had lots of open water and more beaver on the Pennypack any way this year there does not seem to be any I guess I trapped them all out . I was thinking of going up the poho and try that I have seen beaver up there and the po stays open due to the tailwater .
