The Coons Have not cooperated this year I have had 3 big coon campaigns to cover the warm fronts that have moved in since december the 15th . I only took 2 coons in that time frame and I got kicked out of that spot by lower morelands finest . Anyway I have been making up on the coon shortfall with premium fox pelts . I have been setting this vacant lot for a coupel of weeks now and caught one damaged fox and had 1 trap sprung and 2 dug up . Well I thought I had a wise old 3 fotted fox that was well versed to the ways of dirt hole sets and steel traps . I t took some doin to get these 2 traps in the ground cause I think there is a concrete slab under the whole property wich was mission impossibel to get my traps staked I ruined 3 stakes trying to get them in next year I will employ some grappels at this spot . Any way Fiday last I caught the 2 trap diggers they were both coon and I got my 1st doubel albeit 2 coon . Ill take em one was a huge boar probably pushing 30 lb or bettter the other a typical garden varity 10 lber . I disptched them both with my new 22 pistol and now I dont have to go all Frank Rizzo on them with my hickory stick this is also alot quicker and if you use 22cb shorts its not that loud . I did not redo these sets and left the traps sprung cause of all the weather coming in and what not . The next stop over in Philly produced another coon a real little guy with a ratty looking tail lucky for him with that tail and he was so small he got a pass . I went back to the truck and got a feed sack out and my hickory stick I still brought the pistol incase he would not cooperate then he would have got it . The idea was to throw the feed sack over him pin him down with my foot and depress the spring with the stick well this coon was areal grappler and he had some moves that would have made Dan Gabel take notice . Any way I diched the feed sack idea and got another stick nearby pined him down over his neck and depressed the spring with my hickory stick his foot poped out free and he waddeled off . Another nice feature to these new dog proff coontraps or dp traps for short are the easiness to release an un wanted coon . I think its because the spring is on the side of the trap and you can keep the trap between you and the coon . Hopefullly the little guy will be alot wiser to the ways of traps and grow to be a big fat boar next year when he will not get a pass and will be stetcher bound .
