I am buying a pair of wading boots but am confused by the "felt vs rubber" soles controversy; recognizing the expertise in the club, your recommendation is respectfully requested.

As known, there has been a strong movement the last several years to switch from felt to rubber to avoid the spread of aquatic invasives. In fact, Maryland has outlawed felt soled boots. However, many anglers have resisted the change due to the lower traction of rubber soles. Some companies that have switched to rubber are now returning to felt (to regain sales?).

Last summer I bought a pair of hip boots w/rubber soles, to do my part to reduce the spread of aquatic invasives. Now that I need wading boots, I'm unsure about the "danger" posed by felt soles.

Here's what I have learned: I recently tried to buy a pair of Orvis River Treads wading boots w/rubber soles & carbide cleats @ Mainstream Outfitters in Doylestown & was told that they have been discontinued. Next I called The Fly Shop & spoke to a Customer Service Rep about buying the Simms Freestone Wading Boots w/rubber soles & carbide cleats. The man recommended that based on his bad experience w/them, that I NOT buy them; further, they will be discontinued after Dec. 31st. He suggeated that I buy a pair of Pantagonia boots w/felt soles & cleats. He also advised me to wait until 2012 to see what boot suppliers are offering.

To date I have not ordered any wading boots because I am still uncertain as to wheather to buy felt or rubber soles. I will wait until 2012 to see what the boot manufacturers are offering. Does anyone have experience w/the Pantagomia boot? If so, do you recommend them?

Nevertheless, my dilema continues: felt or rubber (w/cleats)? Your recommendation would be appreciated Thanks.

I have had good luck with Korkers. They come with interchangable soles and hold up relatively well. I tend to buy new boots every other year because I tend to move around when I fish so the mileage adds up. I found a pair of nos borger boots and they wear like iron but only come in felt and are discontinued
