After lunch we jetted to other side of the bight to try for a trophy.

This whole area as far as the eye can see is a wadable flat. We caught more fish and saw some truly impressive bones, luckily by this time I had my game on and presented perfectly to the big boys and even turned them but didn’t stick any. I’m okay with that, if I had landed a double digit bonefish I would have absolutely no reason to go back, as it stands I will have a hard time matching this day.

We followed a medium school into a one entranced tidal pool and had a blast picking the biggest ones out just because we could.

I have a video of dozens and dozens of bones in this pool, Alvin couldn’t stand it and switched out my ‘cuda rod for a bonefish fly and we caught fish until lunch, at one point I said give me a water and took a breather, just unbelievable.

We skirted the mangroves and some took me into my backing, some took me into the mangroves but they all took a well presented fly. I really have fished for a lifetime and have never had a day like that. The 20”ers will take you into your backing, sometimes twice, and I had it set strong to steer them out of the mangroves

Saturday dawned still and bright. You know how you never hit it? Not this time, we cruised at top speed out the middle bight so far I had to ask Alvin if we were going to the mythical West side , he said nah not quite. We stopped at a mangrove ridge and the sun was high and not a hint of a breeze. We assumed the positions and within 2 minutes we were into them and didn’t stop all morning. To the north was a massive mangrove swamp? of sorts, giant tidal pools separated by thin strips of mangroves

It was windy but fishable. We hit 4 or 5 rain squalls and lotsa clouds but by the end I had caught half a dozen bones and that crazy barracuda. That was a blast, we were wading a flat following a mud trail made by a school of bonefish, I had my 8wt and Alvin was carrying a ‘cuda spin rig with a 10” tube type green lure . We passed random bones, which I didn’t stick, sharks, rays, needlefish but when we came upon a barracuda we switched tackle and Alvin says cast in front of him and rip it back as fast as possible. First cast, go again, seconds cast, reel faster, third cast the water exploded and I was into my first barracuda. Alvin took him home for dinner as is the custom and said he was delicious. I took his word for it.

This was outside my room. When I arrived Thursday there was just one other angler at the lodge, Derek from South Africa, he had pretty much ended under here the same way I did. He had fished o Wednesday and Thursday with high winds but his guide had known where to go in those conditions. He also said that Friday was gonna be fine but that Saturday was the day. I let it pass because I never try to talk about fishing until after the fact, I was on a nearly deserted island surrounded by wadable flats and had all the gear I thought I would need. I brought my flies, 8,9,and 10 weight rods, 2 reels and a spare spool, leader material, tools, porn, proper clothing, sunblock, bug spray, etc. so if we found fish I didn’t need any preconceived notions about the trip, I only needed to do my part and fool them , that’s fishing. I read didn’t bring porn, just seeing’s if you’re paying attention.

This was my final box. Of course, Friday, my first day out, Alvin chose a spawning shrimp and I used that for all of Friday and into Saturday. I was up at daybreak Friday and was met with a pretty stiff wind even before the sun had fully risen

Those of you who have fished with me know of my tendency to go my own way and meet up later for burgers and beers, I took it one step further and booked a DIY to Andros on the spur of the moment. not a big leap for me. I booked a guide off the net, Alvin Greene, contacted a lodge he recommended, Swain's Cay Lodge, and booked airfare to Nassau. I immediately started tying bonefish flies and quickly had 5 dozen variations on the gotcha and charlie. It's midnight , I'll continue this this weekend.

Alrighty then, 11 reads so someone is following this, Mikey I’m guessing. I booked a diy trip to Mangrove Cay on Andros Island. It’s in the middle so we naturally fished the Middle Bight, Alvin Greene was my guide and I stayed at Swain’s Cay Lodge , a beautiful place on a lovey flat
