Posted - 06/04/2015 : 14:36:09 Over the years I have named a few spots that only have significance to me . Iwill try to describe them to all you flatlanders who are coming up to my neighbiorhood this weekend . The 1st is the Coburn Riffel this rifel starts at the tailout of the pool under the steel bridge and continues down to the Elk creek confluence . Iwouild say I fish here the most as its close proximity to my house and easy acess . I have had this stretch all to myself on more than 1 occasion this year and have had great dry fly action at the edge of dark and past with biblical spinner falls of both sulphers and coffin flies . The best way to acess this is from the Coburn park across the st from the feathered hook . Park at the pavilion and walk out past the baseball diamond go straight out from 1st base try around the big willow on the oposit bank and go up or down from there . I need to do some pruinig over there around that willow as some grapevines are blocking the best lie Irolled a huge fish there on a big streamer back in April before the vines grew in . The2nd spot I call Sams hole wich has no refrence to our Sam sorry Sam this hole I named for the man that holds ownership to the lands along this hole and maintains parking spots along tunnel rd . head in parking only thanks guys . This stretch is accesed along tunnel rd head downstream from Coburn and look for a concrete bridge on youre left it is a private bridge so Sam can acess his home DONOT BLOCK THE BRIDGE . park in the spots just next to the bridge head in parking only and be careful that big pool below the bridge is over youre head . I sometinmes fish here with my boat launching over by the tunnel down the embakement and just staying in the big hole till late at night . This hole has some real monsters in it I normaly fish the riffle just upstream of Sams bridge . One evening last year a big storm muddied the creek I was fishing a chart/white buctail and hokked a small browny maybe 10or12 inches Iwas bending down to release it when a huge browny swireled at the smaller fish it looked to be a 2footer . This hole has produced lots of fish over 20 inches over the years and that's one of my stops on the night shift . This next spot is realitivly new by name but I have been fishing here since the early80'swhen I used to camp out in my coleman tent . This spot is down in the Poe Paddy park and I call it the Daddy hole . It derives its name from member Jack Walsh who came up to fish the green drake hatch with his adorabel little girl Alden . We had a tough time time finding a parking spot as Poe paddy resembled a new goldstrike rather than a fishing spot . This happens every year on the drake hatch it adds to the charm of the hatch . We did find parking right at the boat launch we got lucky the coffin flies were present in great numbers resembling a snow squal. The 3 of us readied and equipped husled up along the bank trying to find some elbow room between the army of anglers . We found a log in the water with ampel room between the mnearby anglers as sitting room for the 3 of us a nother lucky tuirn . However in our haste we did not bring Aldys bait can with the waxworms that put her in the lead with 2 dandy rainbows she caught on her Donald Duck rod this put her into a pouty mood but her father assured her that he would impale a few coffin flies on her hook and she would redeem her lead for the weekend . Jack ordered her to remain on the log while he attempted to hook some working fish it was now nearing dark and Between the dark the lack of action on Aldys part it prompted a constant chant of DAAAADY ,DAAADY ,DAAADY . So now I call it the daddy hole . Another spot I normaly fish is Spring mills this is a no brainer just continue up along penns creek rd till you come to Spring Mills rely small water but it remains cold through the summer and gets a real nice trico hatch as long as its not sunday morning you can park at the church do not park at the fire house . Spring creek has a lot of spots I named over the years the newest being the bikini hole . Last year I was down Milesburg on spring above the confluence with Bald Eagle .It was a steamer of a hot day wich usualy brings out the tubers and kayakers well I wanted to fish this hole icould not fish all year due to high water well wouldn't you know the day I could thes 3 beutys were launching there tubes or trying to hop in them they were trying to hop up in those tubes providing me with some rely nice eye candy any 1 of them could have been centerfolds as they apologized for wrecking my spot . I replied girls if it wer not for youre bekinis I d be realy pissed and assured them they provided me with more joy in 5 minutes than catching trout all day from then on its been the bikini hole and has produced what I refer to as the LSD Rainbows with such vivid colors like an acid trip . I used to own this spot but a few years ago they took out a dam upstream and the flows have realy increased and I do not get the same drift so I do not catch as many . Another spot on spring is the match factory were logasnbranch dumps into spring although its called the match factory we no longer park there instead we go up to Reynolds ave and acess at muarano dog park you can only stay till sunset then you HAVE TO LEAVE OR MOVE OVER TO THE MATCH FACTORY THIS SPOT IS IN DOWNTOWN BELLFONTE . The hog trough is the spot below the water st bridge in downtown bellfonte . This is were I hooked the biggest trout of my life a true 3footer acess is a little gray The day I hooked the big one I ahad gotten permission from the sign guy he has since moved out but I have been back several times and no one has bothered me the parking is at the site of the old bush house hotel wich burnt down years ago you have to go up the st caticorner from Tellyride park and turn into the vacant lot acess the streanm along the stone wall . Leave youre 5x and 4 wgts in the car this is 8lb test water and a seven weight if you got one . If you do not believe me go up on the bridge buy some pellets out of the mavchine and throw them in the water and will become a true beliver use 'flys ' like the green weeny and bait type patterns worms eggs and such . Fishermans paridise everybody wants to go here to me its like driving 200 miles to fish the little lehi but everybody should go and see the 1st catch and release site in PA a good sight seeing stop but a far cry of its heyday they no longer stock it everyday like back then . All the big fish in there are escapees from the hatchery and have seen it ALL GO CHECK IT OUT FOR THE NOVELTY THAT IT IS BUT SAVE YOURE REAL FISHING TO OTHER PARTS OF THE AREA . |
