Posted - 06/13/2014 : 11:52:46 Last weekend Jack Walsh and his 4 year old daughter from Cali headed up to the trailer to fish Penns creek and the magical greendrake hatch . I am now employed on 2nd shift so we left sat morn after my shift we left Jacks house at 3 am . I got up to centre county at about dawn I gave Jack a quick tour of Penns and stopped by the flyshop the feathered hook . Thats were the mlfers were staying we saw Mike Ebner out back sipping on a mug of coffee we said howdy and headed for the trailer for some shuteye . After the nap we headed over to penns and fished the Coburn riffel and the junction pool elk/penns . To say I worked that riffel over would be an understatement no takes no fish . We fished till 5 and then went back and ate dinner and talked over were we would fish the evening . It was unanomous we went down the park poe paddy . Upon arriving there were no parking spots no supprise to me aN OLD VETERAN OF THE GREEN DRAKE we did manage to find a spot at all places but the poe paddy parking lot /boatramp . We suited up and headed upstream it was like pulaski fisherman everywere we managed to worm our way inbetween some guys by a huge log laying in the water the coffin flys filled the air as we decended into the creek . Jack was awestruck as he had never witnesed such an event it was a truly biblical wth thousands of flys hovering over the creek . Some were rising I coverd them with all my patterns that have worked so well over the years to no avail .We fished till past dark while Aldin was whining back on the bank with continuous cadences of DAAAAAADY . It was quite rough on the nerves being the fish refused our offerings and the whining we decided to quit and the whining subsided wich was more of areliefe thwen catching fish . Thats the 1st time I ever got skunked on a green drake hatch but I am not blamming Aldin we just could not catch them . After we wereat the truck I said Aldy you are one tough young lady despite youre whinning and being out past dark . She said " thats cause IM nocturnal " .We had a good laugh on that one on the way back to camp we stopped by Poe lake to see if there were any cofin flys there but somebody was fishing there with lanterns and I did not want to disturb them . I saw no drakes . Sunday we fished up at Spring mills and again we got skunked however Aldy got a nice rainbow on her domnald duck rod with a night crawler so that left Aldy and Donaldduck hirod . After that we went back down tunnel rd and fished the tressel pool I caught a few on the green drake nymph but Aldy got another Rainbow on ther Donald Duck rod and the night crawler it was 17 or 18 inches a real nice one .So to wrap up the weekend the kid from Cali and her Donalduck rod caught the 2 biggest fish while the 2 veterasn flyfisherman with thousands of dollars of equipment got betterd by a 4 year old and her Donald Duck rod . |

Posted - 06/13/2014 : 21:41:26 Oh yea - I've never been to Pulaski but I've never seen the so many fisherman in the Coburn area. Thursday night I was down at Cherry Run and you couldn't fit another car in the parking lot or along the stone road leading to it.
And Friday and Saturday night the entire length of Tunnel Road was lined w/ cars. We'd go to our spot above the trestle bridge in the afternoon and hold our ground from the hordes coming in for the evening 'event'.

Posted - 06/13/2014 : 21:32:48 Yepper the Green Drakes were really on last weekend. And if we could have stayed another couple days it would have been heavier. The 'hatch' was just coming on a day or so before we arrived and hadn't peaked yet.
It was truely amazing to see a full blown Drake hatch. I'd never experienced before either. To me it would have been worth it just to see the hatch - catching fish was a bonus. Daytime fishing was 'slow' for the 4 of us that were there - but fish were caught.
The action didn't really start happening 'till around 8pm when the sky was full of dancing bugs. Then around dark it really picked up. Just had to cast to the sound of fish. Friday night young Will - a friend of Rocky Man's was in the right spot - he was hooking up and landing on about every 5th cast. He had an awesome night. That young fella has a sweet controlled cast and drift - he is gonna be a heck of a fly fisherman as he's quite good now.
