The past week I went fly fishin' @ Yellow Breeches & shown above are fishermen in the stream.  Unlike normal fly fishing where the fisherman positions himself/herself near the waters edge & fishes the middle of the stream, @ YB one stands in the center of the creek (!!) & casts toward the waters edge, where trout lie under the bushes/trees awaiting an insect to fall off.

Brook trout caught on a #20 Czech Nymph. Also caught one on a #20 Pink Scud.  Hooked & lost one on a Beetle.  Main reason for fishin' the YB now was the White Fly hatch, which is prolific from mid-Aug thru early Sept. However, this fly hatches before dark & is fished during the dark.  While I have bait fished lakes w/a lantern,  I have never fished a fast moving, rocky bottom trout stream in the dark before!! Was apprehensive @ first (especially w/a gimpy right knee) but w/caution, adjusted to fishing @ night. A head lamp aided fly changes & attracted MANY White Flies around the face & hands, causing havoc.  Nevertheless, I managed to catch a trout & chub on a WF spinner; greater success was not experienced because I used a #14 fly (per recommendation of the owner of YB Outfitters) but the actual flies were #16 & 18.

The PA Fly Fishing Museum @ Allenberry Resort (Boiling Springs) has upgraded their exhibits earlier this year.  Shown above is the George Harvey exhibit, whose reputation as a pioneer fly fisherman is well known. Aside from his FF skills & other achievements, he started fly tying & fly fishing classes @ Penn State that became an accredited program (the 1st in the U.S.).

Be aware that I searched diligently for the exhibit honoring Sam Vigorita w/a U.S. President but alas, could not find it. Perhaps it is still in progress. Ha Ha Ha
And NO, I did not see nor hear any cicados. |

Try swinging some white wets after dark size 12 . Also might I sugest trying some of the other local streams nearby like Greenspring creek a twin to the letort without the mud it is west near newville before you get to bigspring .Agreat spring creek and a good terestrial spot during daylight hours . Another thing you can try is the big susky it also gets the white fly hatch and the smallys gorge themselves . Afew other nearby streams in Boiling Springs are MT creek and the yellow breeches southof town past the chicken farm this is open water and only a few locals fish it . Do not forget the lake it is full of wild and stocked trout and one of a few totaly spring fed lakes in the comonwealtth . |

Thanks, Steve, for the advice on night fishing. Aside from the head lamp w/new batteries, I had a spare maglite, just-in-case. Also had a wading stick (a broomstick, since my $95 collapsable wading staff sticks in the sand or mud & opens up when extracted).  Biggest surprise was the massive amount of flies @ head & hands when the head lamp was turned on & a White Fly changed, even though I had tied several flies on a tippet w/a looped end, for expedient change. Next time I will use a head net to keep the flies away from my head; found same online @ Bass Pro Shop for $4.50. Based on this experience, I'll try night fishin' again! |

Congrats on youre recent trip . As far as night fishing goes I have night fished for almost 3 decades . M y set up is a simple one the leader is the most important thing you need to ditch the whole dryfly mentality and use a good strong leader that tapers down from 30lb for the butt and tapers down in 20 inch incraments to 10lb test all maxima brown and leave a tag of about6 inches right above the tippet the whole leader should be about 7 ft long . The next most important thing are youre flys the point fly should be the George Harvey pusher fly wich is tied on a #1/0 heavy wetfly hook like a 9672 or a 3906b tail 2 small goose breast feathers splayed outward body dark black australian possum tied cigar shaped in a dubbing loop palmer black saddel hackel tied the fulll length tie in 2 large goose feathers so when they are swept back they reach the bend they should be tied on a 90degree angel off the shank right up behind the eye after that tie in a full collar with about 5 turns of another saddel hackel .whip finish a nice head and thats it . For the dropper I use a size #2 professor . I f I caught 100 trout at night 99 of em were on the pusher I get about 10% on the professor . Swing these on the dark of the moon and hang on . I have taken fish from 7 inchers up to 25 inchers and lost a real monster on the upper d one night that broke the tippet and that was 10 lb . Never fish on a foggy night or a cloudy night , know youre water, fish the head of the poll and the tail thouroughly and slowly try to fish were colder tribs come in they will stack up there never fish at night with out a wading stick it will become youre eyes always have 2 or 3 flash lights ,have youre rod rigged for night and bring it with and after the dryfly action stash the other rod in the bushes and youre night rig will be ready .The fly that Joe Humphreys caught that levithin on was in fact the pusher fly and it took ALOT OF BEGGING ON jOES BEHALF TO GET THE RTECIPE FOR THAT FLY FROM GEORGE . I became a creature of the night right there on that very water on the white fly hatch . Since that fruitfull night I have been a creature of the night searching out monsters that go bump in the night somewhat of a fishing VonHellsing . I always takle a few fish every night I go in the 17 to 20 inch class with Browns being the most caught . M y best night was on the upper d when I caught 2 giant browns back to back one was around 25 the other a bit smaller . . Anyway welcome and learn the transylvania swing and youl soon be into the monsters . |
