Posted - 01/23/2013 : 17:53:32 Well I got back into trapping again I have not trapped since 1978 and have since sold all my stuff . I had to buy all my gear its mind bogling all the new gagets they have today including some new dog proof coon traps . I never caught any dogs the whole time I trapped back in the 70's any way these trapsd are realy cool they have a stake built in right on the bottom so you can set them anywere dumpsters , parks all the places you might catch a dog or cat the coon has to reach into the trap and grab the trigger and pull to to fire the terap impopssibel you say well I caght both my coon in these dog proof traps and I think they are the greatest things since the conibear trap . So far I only got 9 muskrats ,2 coon and I got 4 fox out of 6 traps since last Sunday it seems there are a lot of fox around cause I am getting visits every night either a fox or dug up trap if the fox does not step into the kill zone sometimes the trap will move if you did not bed it down tight and it looks like the fox dug up the trap but its just from the movement and it exposes the trap and they get the bait and avoid the trap . This has happened almost every night at one of my sets . I also notice the calling card of Mr Reynard and that would fresh scat right on the set usualy I will redo the set AND USE THIS FRESH SCAT TO FENCE OLE SLY FOOT RIGHT ON THE FIRE ZONE SO FAR IT HAS WORKED ON 4 FOXES . I set a new area today over in philly neasr a long stretch of foxy looking teritory lots of heavy cover and woods and rr tracks that parellell this tract . I was only abel to get in 3 sets and it was a workout with the frozen ground and all the rocks no doubt balast from the road that goes thru this area and the rr tracks .Any WAY i RUINED 3 CABEL STAKE ENDS TRYING TO STAKE DOWN MY TRAPS AND IT TOOK 3 DIFFRENT SITES TO GET THE 1ST SET IN AFTER THAT i GOT LUCKY AND BLEW OUT THE LAST 2 IN NORMAL TIME . The big problem this time of year with dirt hole sets is freezing dirt and frozen un fierabel traps that are frozen in a big brick of frozen toppping . Pro trappers usualy have a big pile of bone dry dirt they gather in the summer and dry it till season also you should have diffrent colors to match the area you are setting .All this work is worth it when you see THE QUALITY OF THE PELTS THIS TIME OF YEAR . aNYWAY THE SEASON WILL COME TO AN END ON FEB 17TH AND I got some nice fur for my hard work . There are more redfox today then ever and I believe if you set the median on the boulivard you could probably catch a few . Beavers are now open till march 31 we here in this area of the state re allowed 20 beavers up state in wayne county you can catch 40 beavers some asreas are only 5 beavers for a grand total of 65 state wide yes there are alot of beavers . I have found them in the most unlikely places pennypack creek , neshaminy , little neshaminy , and so foth . After fox goes out I may persue the beavers I would sure like to geet up in that 40 zone but I would not know were to stay and if youre up there for 310 dollars you can get a ny license and catch all the beavers you want no limit in ny and otters too no limit on otters some areas stay open till March 31st just like Pennsy .Any way ths trapping has realy got its hooks in me and everday I get a nice work out Ill be sorry when the seasons over. |

Posted - 02/06/2013 : 18:07:46 If you want vixen fur either take up trapping or buy the whole pelt off of me I only have 2 females all the rest were males . I got one on sunday a male but I chucked it out the shoulder had a huge op[en sore either a realy bad mange hot spot or it got into it with a yote . I have seen no evidence of yotes in the area although something keeps digging up my trap down the line from the last one with the sore . This is a comn trait of either a fox that got pinched or a yote . That would realy make my year to catch a big yote it would be a miracel to hold it in a 1.50 coil spring trap but Iheard its not impossibel maybe an early morning catch right before I gert there . I was resetting the trsap that caught the mangy fox today when 2 cops snuck up on me I looked and they were right there maybe they thought I was berrying some donuts . I told them I was setting up for fox I just hope they did not blow the whole area leaving down alot of foreign odor the urine I have been using has realy masked all the odors I left behind cause every set has been visited at least once . Well there is only till the 17th and the season will be over eccept for beaver wich goes till march 31st . I found a new coon spot right near my house and I can rig a drowning cabel under the bridge so I wont have any dispatch problems with the neighbors maybe this weekend there is a warm front coming in and that will have the coon out looking for grub . I noticed some tracks in the new snow at a few of my fox spots and punched in a few coon traps today maybe hell be out again tonight . I now have beaver traps they all hsave to be adjusted and dyed/waxed and they should be ready by the end of fox and coon season so I will roll right into that I found some wild birch trees today and I can get some nice bait sticks off of them . I can not believe there are beaver were I am finding them on the Pennypack I can remember back in the 60s even an atheist could walk on the pennypack and unless beaver liked shopping carts they would have starved to death or maybe caught fire if there nawing made a spark the whole damn crrek coulsdd catch fire with all the polution that was in there now there are beavers thriving in the pennypack . |

Posted - 01/30/2013 : 19:52:03 Well I got another fox tuesday and had my first loss . Monday morning as I was walking up on my last trap to check I had another fox in a trap I caught one in 2 weeks ago . I had just set down my pack and was fixing to administer the two hickory drops for sedation this fox made a lunge and was free I never saw anything run so fast in all my days with the trap attached . Ihad my pistol out in a flash ole wyat earp would have been astonished however it was not fast enough to catch up to ole red the red flash was rapidly gaining ground . I was in hot pursuit I dumped the pack which was loaded with coon traps cause I wanted to make some sets to cover this warm front that has settled in and no dobt will have the coon out on a feeding frenzy I missed 2 last night and made more sets today I now have 21 coon sets out tonight . Back to the fox I followed the fox as best I could and it presented me with a shot about 60 70 yds with my pistol wich I have loaded with cb shorts . Anyway I took the shot but that just put the fox in hyperdrive and it dissapeared . I am 99 % shure it went into a giant brush pile from the nearby golfcourse cause there were no tracks in the snow on the other side and none up along both sides of the rr tracks . I walked up and down those tracks at least 10 times and doubled back to the trap site a bunch of times I went and made some coon sets and went back over the grounds a cupel more times . I am pretty sure that fox has a den in that brush pile there are a nbunch of ground tunels around it and maybe it will chew that trap off it was caught by the toes so it will survie if it gets that trap off . Next year I will have quite the challenge to catch ole three foot the wisest fox in Montgomery county . Counting that fox I got 7 so far in 2 weeks I never in my wildest dreams thought I would do so good on the fox its alot of hard work keeping up with new dirt everytime it freezes . For now I am leaving the traps that have caught foxes sprung and the set in as is condition till all this wet weather gets out of here then I will redo all the sets and rebait . I am eyeballing some new territory over around FtWashington were I put some coon traps in today real foxy looking territory I need to get some more dirt I havre some coverd up at the const yard were I am parking and the guy said to help my self . Back to this getaway fox I am told this happens to every trapper it is what you do to prevent it again . I have been using these one way ground cabel stakes that go into the ground and you seat them by pulling on an angel and once they are seated thats were they stay you attach them to the swivel on youre trap with an s hook and thats what happened the s hook opened just enough to let the cabel slip thru and the foxs escape . I never thought to check the s hook on the last catch that was made at this set I will now check every time I do a remake some say to use 2 s hooks then the hole on the trap swivel would have to be enlarged making it weaker with less meat around the hole or a heavier s hook . Anyway for now I have no more dyed and waxed s hooks so I will just give all the existing s hooks a good squeze when I do the remakes this weekend . The season goes out the 17th of Febuary so I only have like 2 weeks left . I use these ground stakes to prevent trap theft no body is taking these traps without tools to open up the s hooks . Maybe next year I will go with rebar sakes no fox is going to open a s hook wide enough to get around a 1/2 " rebar stake but then the trap thieves can come along and just pull up the stakes . Maybe next year I WILL BE WAY OUT AWAY FROM HERE WERE YOU CAN SHOOT TRAP THIEVES KINDA LIKE HORSE THIEVES BACK IN THE OLE WEST BUT WITH FACIAL PIERCINGS . |

Posted - 01/24/2013 : 11:55:18 Well I CHECKED MY TRAPS AGAIN THIS MORNING AND NOTHING .oLE SLYFOOT THE REYNARD MADE THE HIT ON ONE OF MY SETS AND GOT THE BAIT WITHOUT GETTING CAUGHT .The upside is Ihave no remakes and thats agood thing being all my "drydirt' IS FROZEN SOLID IN A 5 GAL BUCKET.I thought for sure I would have some action at the new sets maybe tonight they will produce . I went down the pennypack to have alook see at the beaver area and alot of bubbels under the ice it look like Lawrence Welk did ashow under the ice last night . Anyways I am looking to get into these bweavers real soon I have located 3 colonys so far right here in 5d and all I need is my traps and some 11 gauge wire that will be about 225 for a dozen #4's coilspring dukes and 6 330 conibears . The only thing is you can only set 2 conibears in our area and only 10 traps total . Up in the 40 beaver area or 3c you can use 20 traps 10 footholds or conibears and 10 snares and they all have to be ubnderwater with a legibel tag above water anyway Ihope to get as few flattails before too long . Then the fun begins with the skinning and the fleshing about 1 hour each beaver plus harvesting the oil sacks and the castors wich both bring money from the furbuyers ablanket size pelt is bringing 30 . If anyone knows a cheap place to stay up in wayne county give me a holler 267 750 9610 |
