- Who would be up for a cast & blast outing ? -
Sometime in the fall - we can pick a nice place to fish a half day & phesant hunt a half day. Some of the fall stocked lakes also have stocked birds - me and the Beaver use to do this a lot. It will be fun if a bunch of us can go. We could realy break stones, if you get no fish and miss a shot - everyone just shoots you !!.
Give a reply & if there is a good responce I will bring it up with Rocket man to plan it out. I also Have a new place I know of to pay to hunt thats only 10.00 for each bird and there is lots of action there plus its right near a great stream that lots of us like to fish. Just fish - just hunt - do both, who cares as long as we have fun, everyone can go !!! Sam

After much debating ,I decieded to enter into this topic. So here goes. First, anyone who hunted pheasants from the late 50's to the early 70's in this state will tell you just how good it was. There hasnt been any wild pheasants in this state for 30+ years now.
I'll agree with SGT Shultz on hunting public ground today and chasing a few stocked birds for the most part only serves to take you gun for a walk.

Unfortunately if you want to hunt and stand a good chance to get some shooting in, your pretty much religated to preserves in this state. (I said shooting...killing birds depends on how good a shot you are).
I , like SGT Shultz,
wouldnt waist my time chasing a stocking truck or taking a chance getting shot by nimrods where they stock. I hunted a preserve last year for the first time since giving up on pheasents 35 yrs ago. The experience was a good one, hunting with guys I knew and trusted and birds that suprisingly flushed well and even ones that the dogs had to go back over the fields a second time to get up......Nothing will replace the hunting of wild birds (if you've ever experienced it) ..but those days are long over in this state! Count me out unless it's a presevre in Pa. or South Dakota for wild birds.

sgt - i get my share of kills & misses & most of all I have a good time and like fishing I have some spots where there is no one but me there hunting or not many people. Plus I think its nicer to hunt with your so called idiots & drunks then all the yuppies wanting to take everyones money and that are f--king up ALL the sports. we need to have a meeting on this to decide where to go ? pay to hunt or public land. What ever the guys want is ok with me
TOM-
that sounds good to me - i have fished that area in the past & its nice there - while everyone is fighting over where to pay someone to hunt, lets go fishing. <*)))><

Yo, Mike. I like the French Creek idea. This would make a cool fall outing to share techniques and experiences(and lies

Another idea for consideration in the future might be the Lehigh River at White Haven (as a suggestion). I've camped at Hickory Run State Park (fifteen minutes away) and loved it.

Besides the Lehigh River (for those BIG river anglers, Sam) there are many streams and lakes within the the Hickory Run park boundaries, especially Fourth Run and Sand Spring Run. These streams are stocked with brook and brown trout. Mud Run is a delayed harvest, artificial lure only stream. The lower 2.9 miles of Hickory Run, from near the Saylorsville Dam to the Lehigh River, is a catch and release fishing only area. These runs empty into the Lehigh.

And, if you're not into camping, I think there is a Ramada Inn at White Haven.

You might give it a thought.

hOW MANY BIRDS DID YOU KILL LAST YEAR ON PUBLIICK GROUND 1OR 2 . wow the ecitement is enough to make one fell faint. Iuse to kill that many the 1st hour when we had birds where do you think your birds come from they are all STOCKED . The only diffrence is the amont of birds stocked do not cover the bag limit for the amount of hunters . As far as being un sporting I beg to differ 1ST OF ALL YOU ARE NOT ALOWED ON THE PRESERVES I HUNT WITHOUT A DOG SO DOGS FIND AND FLUSH THE BIRDS AND BELIEVE ME THEY RUN OR FLY THEY DO NOT STAND THERE AND LET YOU SHOOT THEM every body gets 4 birds and my dogs have always flushed all 4 plus i always go in the afternoon when there are always left overs from the morning this will add some more flushes we average over10 flushees per gun plus quail and chuckers it all adds up to something you may never find on publick ground ACTION.Oh and the cost is still under 100 and I am sure if we have enough guys we would get a discount . So you can walk every saturday for a whole season and never fire a shot or realy heat the bareel up at a preserve plus you wont find the idiots and drunks like publick ground .

this topic could get crazy ?
Paying to hunt & fish I think is what is F -ing up the sport!!
All the pretend pro's acting like they know everything & just want to take your money. I say F-um, I have no time for all the want-a-be's that are just in it for the money because they can't go out and get a real job. Buy the way, walking is part of bird hunting.
Yo Sgt schultz; - I here there is a new place to go hunt?? its great for guys that don't want to walk. Its just like trap shooting, you can sit in a chair and yell pull - then a Phesant pops up out of the machine & you just kill it -- great Ha. no walking ! but it will cost big bucks !!!! - lets Stop the crap & go have some fun.... <*)))><

Hold on there! Let me get this 'preserve' hunting understood. It's like you call up ahead of time and order a dozen birds and tell them I'll be there about 10am after a late breakfast. Then they drive you to a field where the tame farm raised birds have been released. Then you walk the field and shoot them

hmmm! What's next. Think I'll go fishing this weekend. But first I'll call the hatchery and buy a dozen fish and have them released in the bridge pool over on the Skippie.

True Story: Friends called ahead for a canned pheasant shoot. 1/2 the birds still had the hoods over their heads. Seems the gamekeeper let a bunch of them get loose before he took the hoods off. Some folks shoot from a blind - others shoot blind birds.

CLOVER HOLLOW AND LEHI RIVER. cLOVER HOLLOW PRESERVE IN SCHNEKSVILLE IS AN AWESOME PRESERVE AND THE LEHI IS NOT FAR AWAY. The thought of shooting a pheasant on public ground is like believing in Santa clause . The only thing youll get on publick ground is a good hikeWhy not join a gym or just put on your hunting gear and go jogging plus going publick without a dog is a waste of time unless you like saving shells . I know nick shot a few last year up trexlertown I guess he got there right behind the stocking truck. To each his own if you get your jollys taking your gun for a walk have at it. I will not hunt on publick ground the only thing I get is agrevation THE CROP OF "PHEASANTS" PALES IN COMPARISON TO THE CROP OF IDIOTS YOULL COME ACROSS. bACK IN THE 70'S PENNSY WAS FAMOUS FOR PHEASANTS YOU DID NOT NEED A DOG AND WE GOT OUR LIMIT MOST OF THE TIMES OUT. NOWADAYS YO'LL BE LUCKY TO FIRE A FEW SHOTS ALL SEASON . I will only hunt Phesants now on a preserve my hunting time is most precious and one day on a preserve is like 5 seasons on publick Igo maybe 2 times a year and my dogs always flush every bird that was stocked plus some leftovers . WE should have the cast and blast at clover hollow we might get a group rate .

Another possibility is the French Creek Park area. There's public hunting grounds and Scotts Run Lake is targeted for stocking this fall on Oct. 3rd & Dec. 12th then again on Jan. 8, 2008.

I would be interested. Not a hunter, but just the fishing sounds cool to me.
