Posted - 10/03/2007 : 22:22:10 Virgil 9/17/93 to 10/04/07 . Virgil was put down today because his health and wellbeing have been deteriorating for about a year now . I got 14 years of good field work from my Virgil .He never won any field trials or ribons but Iwould put him up against any dog down in the mud of the jersey marshes his homefield. This were he proved him self every day we hunted . Small in size he only weighed 65 lbs . and he was a true hunter with a desire that would burn up Manhatten and a heart the size of Texas. He took to mud and water like a bullfrog from the time he was a pup an Ice breaker and marathon swimmer CHASING crippels across the icy bays and marshes never ever ginving up even in the coldest water . As far as upland I would stick to preserves and he would find every bird out there hitiing the heavy cover like crazed coyote . HE would often end the day looking like he showed up at a knife fight with just his face for aweapon even his tomngue would be bloody . He was a great companion to my old dad in his final years and turned out to be a great roommate never abig eater he was always great to go in halveseys on PIZZA. Outside of the hunting arena he was great on other activitys Fishing he always liked boats especialy the driftboat up the delawareleave him behind and it would sound like the gates of hell were opened up he would even fetch up a trout every now and again [ones that fell from the net of course]. Virg we will miss you Tazz my other lab is still looking around the house for him he will have some big shoes to fill this season. We get attached to our dogs. We had to put down our Terrier a year and 1/2 ago. We had her for 14 years. It's a sad day when you make the decision - but you gotta do what's best for the dog. In our case the decision was made for us. We came home and found her in the closet, just confused and not knowing which way to turn or anything.
She'd been sick for more than a year but doing OK but her time came. Turned out she had a kind of stroke that left her blind and no sense of balance and she was going downhill fast. We took her to the emergency vet clinic and said our good-byes.
-- Best regards at the loss of your friend, Mike --
PS: Damn dog cost me close to a grand in Dr. bills one year when she blew out a knee chasing a rabbit. But we'd had her so long by then we just sucked it up and paid the bills.
Life is good! I started out with nothing and I still have half of it left! |
