I stopped up cabelas last fri night picked up another stand for center county btw they are $30 cheaper about 80 with a lock . The stand I like is the pine ridge 15' very simpel and easy to set up . I noticed a big box of what appeared to be rocks for $20 each I figured they were somthing for deer here they turned out to be saltlicks . Saltlicks and hunting over bait are ILLEGAL IN OUR COMNWEALTH. The fact that Cabelas is selling them in our state is a total lack of respect for our laws and codes . Pa has always been way behind on other states as far as liberalizing some of our laws . I can remember not too long ago 1 deer and you were done. Now if you have enough money and postage stamps you can kill as many as you want. The hunting was better I saw more deer and the woods wee not as crowded. Hopefully the state will not ever allow baiting or saltlicks . If a saltlick is found that entire area can be closed for the entire season. Good luck to all archers on saturday Take adeep breadth aim steady realese breadth and arrow follow through do not come out of your stand for 20 minutes and by all means recover that animal . The antis eyes are everywere so be good sports .

State Farm estimates that 1.5 million vehicles collide with deer every year, resulting in 150 motorists deaths and $1.1 billion in vehicle damages.

And these stats were based just on claims made to State Farm. So the number is probably way higher.

That's an interesting thought - the insurance companies lobbying the Game Commission. I read a long time back the auto-deer accidents. The number was extremely high in PA and nationwide it was astonomical as I recall.

It could also be the upper crust land owners around Valley Forge Park. There's a lot of old estates with mature shrubs and flower garderns that have been devasted in that area.

I've got a feeling the insurance componies have something to do with this.

The allowing of deer baiting on private land (suburbia)serves the "home owners" well.
Now they can get the deer in closer so they (the landowner)can get any easier shot. In reality so called suburban hunting is nothing more than deer elimination. It's not hunting at all, and anyone construing it to be anything else is a fool. Support your Game Commission , next year they may try to merge again with the Fish Commission and have better ideas on how to manage the fish.

No place in my post did I say I'm for baiting deer! I was surprised when I found out it became legal. I was just passing on information - not agreeing w/ or endorsing the use of bait.

My son won't hunt deer w/ a rifle. He say's it's an unfair advantage. You can pop a deer at 100, 200 yards. That's great shootin', he says, but to him it's not hunting - it's good marksmanship.

Count Birky - you're not completely correct. It is legal in PA to hunt deer over bait. It went legal Dec. 26th last year but only in 5 counties.

This is from a Game Commision Press release last Decemeber 2006.

Article Excerpt
HARRISBURG, Pa., Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Beginning Dec. 26, hunters in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties may hunt for deer over bait on private property as a result of regulatory changes approved recently by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Recommended in the agency's Urban/Suburban Deer Management Plan and finalized by the state's Board of Game Commissioners in October, the regulations permit hunters to use baiting to increase the deer kill in the state's highly developed southeastern counties, where deer conflicts are difficult for some residents, and where hunters have had challenges getting close to deer, because of access issues and safety restrictions.

"Baiting provides the means to pull deer from suburban woodlots and private properties harboring large numbers of deer to areas where hunters can legally and safely take them, and away from places where it's simply not appropriate to hunt or field-dress a deer," explained Jeannine Tardiff, Game Commission deer biologist. "Baiting surely wasn't our first choice in the agency's decades-old effort to address deer overpopulation in southeastern Pennsylvania. But, it is one of our few remaining viable options to increase hunter's success.
